Feed In Tarriff (FIT)

Feed-In Tarriff (FIT) Program

Backgroud to the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) Program

The Ontario Power Authority has developed this Feed-In Tariff Program for the Province to encourage and promote greater use of renewable energy sources including wind, waterpower, renewable biomass, bio-gas, landfill gas and solar (PV) for electricity generating projects in Ontario. The fundamental objective of the FIT Program, in conjunction with the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 is to facilitate the increased development of renewable generating facilities of varying sizes, technologies and configurations via a standardized, open and fair process. The FIT Program is for renewable generating facilities of any size except for waterpower projects which are subject to a maximum capacity of 50 MW for purposes of the FIT Program.

Projects that are 10 kW or less in capacity can apply under the microFIT Rules and should refer to the Ontario Power Authority Website, which contains the rules for this streamlined process.

If you have a FIT contract with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to connect your project to the Hydro One SSM transmission system, you have to apply to the IESO for a Connection Assessment. Information regarding this application is available on the IESO website http://ieso.ca/imoweb/fit/fit.asp.

For connection of a FIT project to the Hydro One SSM transmission system the IESO will forward to Hydro One SSM a copy of your application (Renewable Energy Generation Facility Application to Request a Connection Assessment). For Fit projects, there is no need to complete a “Hydro One SSM Customer Connection Application Form Apr 15, 2008 DOC” as described below in the Customer Connection Process section because the FIT application is a joint IESO and Hydro One SSM application.

Hydro One SSM will send to the Applicant, within 2 business days of receiving the application from the IESO, a Hydro One SSM SIA/CIA Agreement that must be signed by the Applicant and allows Hydro One SSM to recover its cost for any Hydro One SSM work associated with the IESO System Impact Assessment (SIA) and Hydro One SSM Customer Impact Assessment (CIA). The Applicant is requested to promptly return the signed Agreement so the connection process is not delayed.
